The Adventures of COMICS!
Comic Book Cartooning Lectures and Workshops
...have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My name is John Mundt, Esq., and I am now the Wisconsin based cartoonist of The Adventures of Monkey, but I was once just an introverted kid who liked to read. Whether it was Batman, Spider-Man, Archie, Casper, or even Donald Duck, I just couldn't get enough of the fantastic world of comics. Eventually, I also read every book on the subject that I could find. I suppose that it was only natural that I should decide to seek a career in cartooning. After high school, I attended the world famous Joe Kubert School of Cartoon Art in Dover, New Jersey. Also, since 1986, I have taken what I've learned about making comics, and have shared it with youth groups, library programs, schools, museums, and other folks through fun and interesting lectures, workshops, and other events.
...cover a lot of ground, quickly and entertainingly, from the history of this unique American artform, to basic figure drawing, to the secret language of page layouts, to technical tips. I also offer advice to aspiring cartoonists on how to start their own comic books. My presentation lasts anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on my hosts' needs. I provide the hosting organization with graphics and related materials for advertising and other promotional purposes, and I bring lots of descriptive samples and cool free stuff with me (so that everyone leaves with something). Oh, and I draw a lot!
For basic 45 minute to 2 hour lecture workshops (although not set in stone), I have been asking
- $150.00 per event
- 27 cents per mile (according to MapQuest)
- Sometimes lodging, if the venue is 500 or more miles round trip away
I also have an extended program, which I call "Done-In-One" Comic Book in a Day, in which I help attendees create an entire collaborative comic from scratch. At the end of the three to four hour event, everyone gets a copy! They also make fun fund-raisers! The rate for the "Done-In-One" workshop is $250.00.
... some very nice things about my comic book presentations. I was mentioned by Manitowoc Public Library Young Adult Librarian, Brian Simons, in the February, 2003, issue of V.O.Y.A., and I was featured in the July, 2002, issue of The Tapestry magazine. I've given my lectures in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. I've talked with groups as diverse as retired teachers, high school art students, preschoolers, and church groups. Here, below, is one of my favorite reviews...
